Professor Anders O. F. Hendrickson of St. Norbert College

"Multiplication without Numbers: A First Look at Groups"

Abstract: Open a book of advanced mathematics, and you might be surprised at how few numbers there are on the pages. When asked to help split the check at a restaurant, many a professional mathematician has responded, "Ask my friend the engineer; I haven't used numbers in years." How is it that so much mathematics has so little to do with numbers? What kinds of multiplication involve no numbers at all? We will use these questions as an introduction to the fascinating subject of group theory.

Biography:

Anders Hendrickson grew up in Iowa and attended St. Olaf College in southern Minnesota before completing a Ph.D. in mathematics at UW-Madison. After four years teaching at Concordia College in western Minnesota, he recently returned to Wisconsin to teach at St. Norbert College in Green Bay. His specialty is the representation theory of finite groups, but he also enjoys reading Latin, baking bread, and playing with his three children.
